"I’ve always lived in my own little world," says Jess. "My family used to say the world is definitely according to you, I’ve never seen anyone dress in polka dots, plaids, and a dozen hair clips for school pictures." And with this, came the birth of World According to Jess my life long dream to start a company driven by humor, creativity, and tons of personality. It's been a long and adventurous road from suburban Canton, MA to the Big Apple. But over the course of many years, multiple jobs, business adversities, and life changes, Jess has maintained a clear sense of her company’s mission...kick a** fashion that functions. Jess’s entrepreneurial spirit sparked in elementary school, painting disney characters on denim and designing barbie clothes for classmates. "I have always dreamt big, no matter what I lacked monetarily. If kids were wearing the latest and greatest expensive labels, I would make my own wildly unique and fun clothing out of hand-me-downs and trinkets from the salvation army." It was only after graduating from Syracuse University, jumping from fashion fabulous to fashion mishap jobs, that Jess could finally create a "world" of her own. "I was in a state of shock after arriving in New York City. I expected every fashion company I worked for to be ready to buck trends and inspire their faithful customers. Instead, they encouraged all employees (including myself) to knock-off big named brands. I worked for over 5 years with companies like this; all the while planning for the day I’d start my own line of wildly fun original accessories." Almost five years have passed since World According to Jess opened its doors to the fashion customers of the world. And since then, the collection of cosmetics, diaper bags, carry-ons, handbags, and dog carriers have gained quick recognition by stars and media alike. Unafraid to break rules and buck trends, World According to Jess is one of a kind. As Jess puts it, "I like to make fun of fashion while emphasizing quality construction and functional design...think ribbons, studs and paint by number! The customer should always expect the unexpected." Jess’s philosophy stems from her run-ins with fashionably useless bags that held nothing of importance. "My last job had me traveling the world at a moments notice, lugging boring black carry on’s. After countless trips and lost luggage, I was compelled to create a colorfully unique bag that would fit in the over head compartment of a plane, glide through x-ray machines, and hold a few days of clothes and work material." And so, World According to Jess and her company’s mission of fashion and function was born. At long last, the epic journey of hard work, trade shows, trunk shows and countless flights finds World According to Jess selling world wide from the US, Japan, the Netherlands, Australia, Germany, and Canada, to various sites on the internet. Jess’s line has been featured in such publications as In Style, Teen Vogue, Elle & Time and television spots on CNN Headline News, Extra, The Today Show & Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Aside from the press, her bags have attracted some of Hollywood’s biggest shoppers such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyonce Knowles, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Simpson, Lindsey Lohan and countless others. Jess continues to expand her business; opening new markets, creating original designs, and marketing her line to media. Her world is still very much "her own" but happily modified to include her daughter Willow, husband David and dog Sammi. "My life is a constant adventure. The sky is truly, and perhaps, the only limit for myself and World According to Jess. There are more journeys to be had and I will never be satisfied until I jump up and down on Oprah’s couch." |
